Our conference this past spring was our biggest yet, with about 100 attendees from around the country.
Our founders, Tom Cornell and Jim Forest, were here. We also met a recent conscientious objector from the Navy named Daniel Baker. Our meeting with Daniel was fruitful indeed, as shortly after the conference he came on staff as an intern. At the conference we also heard of a trip to Rome undertaken by Cornell, Mike Griffin, and Iraq War conscientious objector Joshua Casteel. This was one of the highlights of our year, as it yielded meetings with numerous Vatican officials, even a warm exchange with the pope! Our section of the GI Rights Hotline continued its busy-ness; under a new record-keeping method that carefully tracks individual callers and call-backs, we find that through November 30, we assisted well over 500 military servicemembers, including 50-plus conscientious objectors. We also launched a new web project, We Go On Record which will help budding objectors maintain their CO files electronically. We also continued maintaining our website and had speaking engagements and workshops throughout the Midwest. We continue to publish our journal, The Sign of Peace (our latest issue is currently at press) and have made available more resources on Church Teaching on conscience, war and peace along with resources on Blessed Franz Jägerstätter. The biggest change though has been the departure of long-time staff member Brenna Cussen. This has been a major transition for us, as Brenna was really the glue that held CPF together! It has been tough to keep going at full speed, but with the hiring of Shawn Storer and a little extra effort by all we have done our best to do so. We hope to do even more in 2008. All of this work costs money. Please remember us here at the Catholic Peace Fellowship as we continue the struggle to "raise a mighty league of Catholic conscientious objectors!" Please consider giving to the Catholic Peace Fellowship this Advent. Donations of any size are greatly appreciated. Thank You! You can donate by credit card by clicking the "donation" button below.
